When someone says they want a zombie theme I automatically think it’s carte blanche to go full out blood guts and gore….. But apparently that’s not what my 11 year old son had in mind.
His zombie themed duvet set was actually a very tame version showing the characters from the game Plants vs Zombies.
As a little xmas day treat I decided to make him a matching cushion for his bed.
First I measured out the size of the cushion pad going inside. This was a basic round pad from Dunelm to which I added ⅓ of a smaller square cushion to to make the unusual head shape.
Once happy with the cushion pad I drew a template for the main body of the design (or in this case head). This template needs to be about 2 cm bigger than the actual pad to allow for the seam.
Then I made templates of all the features. These were cut out of different coloured fabrics.
The material I chose was a soft polar fleece which meant that I didn’t need to worry about the edges fraying. If using a woven fabric such as cotton or linen then I would advise that they are backed with an iron on interfacing.
I appliqued the components to created the different colours and layers of the design. This bit was a little challenging, especially with my shaky old lady hands.
Before stitching the back and the front of the design together I added a zip. This is only necessary if you are wanting to be able to remove the pad for washing purposes.
Job done, all finished. That’s one happy little man!
